Know-It-None, Professional Edition

  • I call her the “Teflon Cell Tower”. Every day, she runs hither and yon, like a baby elephant, each meeting more critical than the next. Whatever goes in her ears at one meeting is transmitted out of her mouth at the next, regardless of it’s relationship to the subject matter. Sadly, nothing actually sticks in her brain. Or to her hands, for that matter.

    Consequently, her colleagues are tortured by the endless reiteration of known truths and obvious facts sprinkled with trite consulting buzzwords and business-speak. For her, they are profound thoughts for pressing issues. They may have been someone else's thoughts long ago,but that has no bearing here.

    If her established patter is derailed by a question or a comment, the verbal tap dancing can last for 20 minutes or more until she restores the correct broadcast frequency.

    Given what I have witnessed in the last 15 years, her future is secure – she does no real work, has no real expertise and agrees with everything.

    TCT is no longer my problem. After a long, distinguished career, I had enough FU money to liberate myself when this re-assignment was announced. I love being free from the people I hate, but I do miss hating them on a daily face-to-face basis.

    Stephen Colbert Bravely Takes on Teamwork

    "Now sell me on teamwork, because I don't buy it!" said Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report as he introduced his guest, Duke Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski, author of yet another pseudo business book heralding last century’s idea of corporate togetherness, "The Gold Standard: Building a World-Class Team and get Beyond Basketball."

    We applaud Mr. Colbert for announcing the obvious, "Why should I share the ball with anybody?" and asking the tough questions, "What is the difference between teamwork and socialism?"

    In today's politically correct business world where blunderingly blind corporate teams contribute mightily to our current economic malaise, it's nice to know that at least one top national news anchor understands the true value of saying no to stupid teams and embracing what we call the Soloist within all of us.

    Brand Hate: Domino's Pizza YouTube video scandal

    Dominos-logo Did you see the Domino's Pizza YouTube gross out?  A couple of bored and not terribly bright employees of the pizza chain videotaped themselves stuffing cheese up their noses, waving salami under their rears and other unappetizing acts. Then followed the predictable corporate "brand defense" by CEO Patrick Doyle. Missing in the media coverage was the elephant in the room. Companies that treat employees and customers with respect -- Starbucks comes to mind -- don't suffer the human bacteria that shoot gross out videos.

    Treat your staff like people, pay them decent wages, give them opportunities and deliver a good product, and they will not trash you on the Internet.

     Forget all that pap about "serving the brand." It's about creating cultures where men and women can thrive.

    Think of Italy, a nation where people make real pizza out of authentic ingredients. What's the real message companies should take away from this episode. Create an empire of forgotten and disillusioned workers that assemble factory food, and you risk sponsoring boredom --- and hate.

    Our First Interview For The Book!

    Co-author Marc Hershon was in Hawaii last week and got a chance to peddle I Hate People! (even though it's not out until June 10) when he appeared online during The Andy Bumatai Show! He and Andy, a legendary comedian in the Islands, go way back and the two segments they did covered a lot of ground. But the book was first and foremost, so we feel we're off to a rousing start!
