Did you see the Domino's Pizza YouTube gross out? A couple of bored and not terribly bright employees of the pizza chain videotaped themselves stuffing cheese up their noses, waving salami under their rears and other unappetizing acts. Then followed the predictable corporate "brand defense" by CEO Patrick Doyle. Missing in the media coverage was the elephant in the room. Companies that treat employees and customers with respect -- Starbucks comes to mind -- don't suffer the human bacteria that shoot gross out videos.
Treat your staff like people, pay them decent wages, give them opportunities and deliver a good product, and they will not trash you on the Internet.
Forget all that pap about "serving the brand." It's about creating cultures where men and women can thrive.
Think of Italy, a nation where people make real pizza out of authentic ingredients. What's the real message companies should take away from this episode. Create an empire of forgotten and disillusioned workers that assemble factory food, and you risk sponsoring boredom --- and hate.
